Dressing Your Body Type, For Your Wedding Day!
Every woman wants to look her best on her wedding day. The proliferation of wedding fashion can put any bride in a tail-spin when selecting her gown. While fashion, sense of personal style and cost may be prime factors in your selection, one very important and most times, least considered factor, is your body type. All bodies are not the same. Accordingly, each bride should know her body type and what is the best way to dress that type and therefore accomplish the best look!
The aim of “good body dressing” is to give the illusion of symmetry with all areas of the body. Some good rule of thumb tips are:
Overweight/ Full figured
If you consider yourself full-figured or overweight, try to avoid thin and/or strapless dresses. Use a wider shoulder strap or dress with short sleeves. Keep the upper body simple and free from large bulky details. Best style are high standing or notched collar uppers, Most certainly avoid gathers, tucks, bows and any type of puffed sleeves.
Long Torso/Short Legs/ Triangular Figures
For persons with long torso and short legs, you want the body to be perceived as proportionate so avoid dresses with a yoke. This serves to lengthen the body and further shorten the lower torso, taking away from the full beauty of the dress since eyes are drawn to the upper body. Every bride wants the full effect of her dress to be admired, not only the upper body.
Short or high Waisted/Hourglass or Eclipse type figures
Such a body is perfect for a dress with a yoke. This lengthens the body and draws eye downward giving a look of a longer leaner body. An A or princess line, dropped waist or even a two piece gown works well with such a figure. Avoid any emphasis at the waistline.
Short or thick necks
Bare featureless necklines are the best. Soft V necklines are also good styles, giving length to the neck. Avoid neck jewelry and wear instead longer earrings that would lengthen the neck removing the look of a shortened neck and instead giving it length.
Very Sloping or Narrow Shoulders – All frames
Avoid V necks, scoop necks and wide rounded collars. Hair length also plays a part in drawing the eye away from the shoulders. The best style for your type is keeping hair away from the shoulder. High standing and mandarin collars work wonders on this body type. Choose shoulders with style details such as gathers, pleats, yokes etc. The eye is drawn to the detail and not to the slope or narrow shoulder.
Petite
A line, princess fitted, sheath wrap type styles look good on the petite frame. Avoid yoke, empire lines or full gathered dresses since you can not only easily become lost in the dress but also make you look girly rather than the young woman bride. Keep jewellery small and scaled to your figure.
